The History of Gymnastics

Gymnastics is one of the oldest sports of the Olympics. No one really knows when gymnastics was created, but people think that people have been performing tumbling moves, swinging on tree branches and performing group acrobatics since the beginning of mankind. At first gymnastics was just simply a way of maintaining good health, military training and conditioning regime for athletes. It was mainly created in Greece, a very long time ago.

About 2500 years ago the Greeks were the first to use gymnastics as a real sport. The Greeks started to hold gymnastics tournaments which included tumbling, rope climbing, and other activities like that. But then they realized that it was more valuable for their military training. After the fall of the Roman Empire, gymnastics disappeared for centuries.

A while later the United States created a gymnastics club. Many people went to it, including immigrants. They created it in 1850. Before that, in the late 1800’s, the first up-to-date Olympics was created and Athens was chosen to be the location of it. But gymnastics was still a very small and minor sport it many countries. It took till the 1970’s for the world to realize it was a great sport. After that it became one of the most popular and fast increasing sport in the U.S. Ever since then it has been a very popular sport all over the world and in the Olympics.
